Canadian airport duty free sales up 15.5% for Jan-Feb 2014

Figures released by Duty Free Shop Program and the Canada Border Services Agency for January – February 2014 demonstrate a positive growth of 15.48% on the previous year’s figures for Canadian airport duty free sales in the same period, generating a total $48.7 million in sales.

 

In February alone the total sales for Canadian airports was $25.4m, +16.8% on 2013, with the majority of transactions coming from perfume & cosmetics, liquor, tobacco and jewellery, clocks and watches respectively.

 

Canadian border store sales reached $7m in February 2014, a decrease of 6.25% YOY, while combined figures for the period January – February 2014 resulted in a drop of 5.33% since 2013, with sales of $13.8m.

 

The top performing categories for the airports, in order of sales income for Jan-Feb 2014, were:

 

1. Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare

2. Alcohol (liquor, liqueur, wine, coolers)

3. Tobacco, Cigars, Loose Tobacco

4. Jewellery, Watches, Clocks

5. Food

6. Clothing (including hats, fur, leather)

7. Office and Travel Supplies

8. Accessories (purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc.)

9. Souvenirs (no clothing)

10. Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.

11. Beer (beer, malt-based coolers)

12. Crafts/arts

13. Glassware, Crystal, China, Figurines, Porcelain

14. Other

 

Compared to results for Jan-Dec 2013, jewellery sales have overtaken food in the rankings table, and office and travel supplies have been superceded by clothing, by a small margin. Glassware has also jumped up the rankings over crafts and arts.

 

The top performing categories for the land border stores, in order of sales income for Jan-Feb 2014, were:

 

1. Alcohol (liquor, liqueur, wine, coolers)

2. Tobacco, Cigars, Loose Tobacco

3. Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare

4. Food

5. Beer (beer, malt-based coolers)

6. Jewellery, Watches, Clocks

7. Accessories (purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc.)

8. Clothing (including hats, fur, leather)

9. Souvenirs (no clothing)

10. Office and Travel Supplies

11. Other

12. Glassware, Crystal, China, Figurines, Porcelain

13. Crafts/arts

14. Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.

 

Compared against results for Jan-Dec 2013, where clothing outperformed accessories by just $20, the proportion of the sales mix has changed to give accessories a 1.51% lead over clothing at 1.44%.
