DFS launches The Macallan M at $4,469

DFS Singapore has launched ‘The Macallan M’ on debut at the Changi Airport Group in its stores at Singapore Changi Airport’s three terminals.

The Macallan M from The Edrington Group is described as ‘an exquisite creation born from a collaboration between three masters of their crafts – Fabien Baron, Lalique and The Macallan – to create the most sophisticated whisky in the world contained in an exquisite, exclusively designed crystal decanter.’

Macallan M is also said to be as ‘a masterpiece of design’, with only 1,750 engraved and individually numbered crystal decanters in existence and each unit selling at ‘a suggested retail price’ of S$5,580 ($4,469).

Recounting the creation and the background, DFS said: “M captures the highly expressive aesthetic of Fabien Baron’s illustrious creative vision. The result is a design that takes an unexpected geometric form, and challenges all perceptions of traditional decanter design.

“Fashioned in highest-‐grade crystal, Lalique has drawn on 150 years of mastery and dedication to bring refinement and flawless clarity to M. Each hand crafted, individually numbered decanter unites proven tradition with striking originality; exuding beauty, integrity and expression at every glance.

“Interwoven with rich dried fruits, spices, orange citrus and wood notes, M’s whisky is the creation of its third master, The Macallan, drawing on its classic full-flavoured tradition. With a rich natural colour, complexity and sumptuous intensity never before seen in a single malt, every drop is laden with character absorbed from the Spanish sherry oak casks that nurture it through its maturation process.”

DFS says that the new creation captures ‘the expressive aesthetic’ of Fabien Baron’s creative vision, M’s tall, slim dimensions and geometric form challenge the perceptions of a traditional decanter design. Its sharp, angular facets gave inspiration to the name M itself, selected by Baron as a typographic representation of the decanter’s striking design.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBER SIX

In addition, the product’s six angular facets are said to pay homage to the significance of the number six in The Macallan’s heritage: with Six Pillars each representing a chapter in the story of craftsmanship, quality and pride at the heart of the brand: The Spiritual Home – the breathtaking 390-‐acre Macallan Estate where every drop of M is created; the distillery’s Curiously Small Stills which give the spirit its fruity, full-‐bodied character; The Finest Cut, the 16% of the new make spirit, the smallest figure in the industry, selected for maturation; Exceptional Oak Casks, acquired and cared for without thought to the cost, infusing every drop with distinctive aroma and flavour; Natural Colour created solely through the interaction between spirit and wood; and The Peerless Spirit, marking The Macallan’s unsurpassed place in the hearts of the world’s most discerning consumers.

David Cox, Director of Fine and Rare Whiskies at The Macallan, says: “The coming together of three such masters has resulted in a truly beautiful creation, which specifically showcases the vital influence of The Macallan’s exceptional sherry seasoned oak casks and the craft of the Whisky Maker. The natural colour of M is stunning. A single malt of the most exquisite complexity and character, M will set a new standard in the world of decanters to become the iconic representation of The Macallan.”

An unveiling ceremony was held earlier this week at the DFS Changi Airport Terminal 3 store on Monday 3 June 2013, followed by a cocktail reception at the Chengal Ballroom in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Changi Airport, where DFS Platinum Services Club Members were treated to a tasting of the M Decanter.

Commenting, Parker Gundersen, General Manager at DFS Changi Airport said: “We always aim to bring the best available products to our customers, and both Changi Airport Group and The Edrington Group have been supportive business partners, helping us to achieve this goal with their world-class products and services. We feel incredibly privileged to have launched The Macallan M here in DFS, exclusively for travellers in Changi Airport.”

Ryan Hill, Regional Director of Asia Travel Retail at The Edrington Group added: “Edrington Asia Travel Retail is one of the company’s fastest growing business units and The Macallan is at the heart of this growth. Singapore is one of the brand’s single fastest growing airports and so it was fitting that, when we were presented with the opportunity to launch this product as a Global First, it was an easy decision to make.”
