Kansai’s major renovation programme

By David Hayes |

Kansai Airport Agency Co Ltd (KAA), Kansai International Airport Corporation’s retail arm is planning a major renovation programme for the company’s North Wing and South Wing mixed category shops which are the largest duty free outlets in Kansai Airport.

The renovation programme follows KIAC’s earlier decision not to renew its management contract with Jatco for the two main terminal shops and three satellite last minute mixed category outlets that Jatco managed until March 31, 2013, when the management contract expired.

“We are planning to renovate our Duty Free Shop Kansai Airport North and South wing shops. They are directly managed by KAA for KIAC and located opposite the North and South wing immigration gates,” said Hiroya Saida, Duty Free Business Manager in KAA’s Purchasing & Merchandising Section, talking exclusively to TRBusiness.

“We will start the renovation early in 2014 and we will finish in March 2015. We have not decided the renovation programme yet. We are still scheduling the renovation phases.

“One reason to renovate the shops is that next year it will be the 20th anniversary of the Kansai International Airport’s opening in 1994. We want to enlarge the shops. We may do both the North and South wing shops at the same time,” said Saida.

KIAC’s plans call for KAA’s North Wing duty free shop and KAB Duty Free Shop to be combined as a single shop in future.

The KAB outlet covers 205sq m which when combined with the North Wing shop would create a new mixed category shop covering 650sq m, of which about 600sq m is expected to be used for retailing and 50sq m for storage.
