Incheon Airport receives 400 millionth passenger

By Charlotte Turner |

Incheon International Airport celebrated serving 400 million passengers, since beginning operations 13 years ago, on the 14 August.

On the 14th, Incheon International Airport Corporation held an event to celebrate its 400 millionth passenger in the Arrival Area and the Millennium Hall of the Passenger Terminal.

Incheon International Airport Corporation presented a key – a symbol of good luck – and round-trip tickets to Sun Yun, who arrived at Incheon Airport on Korean Air flight 896 from Shanghai, China.

When it opened in 2001, Incheon Airport only recorded 14.54m visitors. Since then, the figures jumped an average 6.4% every year, reaching 100m in 2005, 200m in 2009, 300m in 2012 and now 400m .

Incheon Airport attributed this growth to several factors, including its continuous efforts to expand its air network, which resulted in 84 service airlines and 193 cities connected at the end of last month, domestic LCCs entering the international route market in 2009 and leading the increase in the number of passengers, and the steady increase of passengers on China routes.

The number of passengers using LCCs exceeded 300,000 in 2009 but grew to 4.88m in 2013 and the number of passengers on China routes climbed from 3.36m in 2003 to 8.91m in 2013.

For the first time since its opening, Incheon Airport recorded 160,000 daily visitors on the 3rd of this month. Incheon Airport also recorded 889 airline flights and 146,704 cargos processed, both figures being the highest ever.
