JR Duty Free upgrades retail at Darwin International Airport

By Charlotte Turner |

JR/Duty Free has reopened its duty free store at Darwin International Airport after a major redesign and shop expansion.

The expanded areas at each end will shortly become fully operational, beginning with international arrivals at the western end, which processed its first flight over the weekend.

Arriving passengers now make their way along a new entry route and will enjoy an ‘improved shopping experience’ in the upgraded JR/Duty Free store.

The expanded JR/Duty Free store will carry a selection of liquor brands, including wine and champagne; luxury fragrances; skincare and cosmetics; watches, handbags, sunglasses; electronics from Apple and Gopro as well as confectionery including M&M’s.

BIGGEST PROJECT SINCE 1991

The Terminal Expansion Project – the biggest since the terminal opened in 1991 – will see the terminal grow to 27,000sq m once each area is fully operational.

Passengers will start moving through the eastern (domestic) end towards the beginning of October, with work on the retail outlets to continue until the end of the year.

The JR/Duty Free Departures store is currently trading out of a temporary location as work on the new outlet continues. This store is due to open early December.

JR Duty Free’s new walk-through shop at Brisbane Airport.

Earlier this month the retailer unveiled new walk-through shops at Brisbane Airport’s A$45m ($42m) International Terminal after winning its 7-year contract last year.

JR RE-ENTERED AUS IN 2007

NT Airports Director Commercial and Aviation Development Jim Parashos said the new store provides passengers with a premium duty free offering.

“We’re very excited about JR/Duty Free opening the doors to its redeveloped outlet,” he said. “Passengers arriving in the expanded internationals area are now met with a contemporary walk-through store – an enjoyable start to their stay in Darwin and a taste of things to come, as the remainder of the terminal upgrades come online.

“JR/Duty Free and DIA have been in partnership for more than six years. The new store builds on our previous successes and we’re thrilled to have JR/Duty Free investing in the shopping experience for Darwin travellers.”

Milton Lasnitzki, CEO of JR/Duty Free said “Darwin Airport marked the re-entry of JR/Duty Free into the Australian duty free market in 2007.

“Since then we have developed a strong partnership with the airport and are delighted to be part of the exciting redevelopment. We are extremely pleased to continue our partnership with Darwin Airport and look forward to serving the people of the Northern Territory and their visitors well into the future.”
