Changi August traffic slips by 0.6%

In line with the Changi Airports Group’s prediction that traffic growth would slow this year, August passenger traffic fell by 0.6% to 4.65m.

However, the number of passengers handled between January and August 2014 rose by 1.1% to 35.84m at Changi Airport compared to the same eight months in 2013. Aircraft movements also rose in tandem by 1.3% to 228,240, while air freight shipments grew 0.7% to 1.22m tonnes for the same period.

The Changi Airport Group said: “During the month, traffic to Northeast Asia, South Asia and Southwest Pacific improved, offset by a decline in Southeast Asia travel.

“There were double-digit increases in passenger movements between Singapore and Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City as well as Sydney among Changi Airport’s top 10 cities. However, travel to and from Bangkok continued to decline, down 11% on-year.”

 

NEW RETAIL AND F&B OUTLETS

Three new retail and F&B outlets began operations in the transit areas at Changi Airport during the month, with Lacoste opening its second store at Changi in T3, while The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, ‘one of the largest family-run coffee and tea companies in the world’, established its fourth and fifth outlets in Changi’s T2 and T3 locations.

Krispy Kreme also opened its latest outlet in the Departure Check-in Hall of Terminal 2, while in Terminal 3, Curry Times, operated by curry puff specialists Old Chang Kee, is now open, serving ‘its famous Curry Chicken, masterfully prepared in a rich curry broth simmered to perfection’, according to CAG.

At the same time, Changi’s most successful promotion ever continues, with its latest ‘Be A Changi Millionaire’ Monthly Winner identified as Mr Seiichiro Oiyama, a 35 year-old Japanese civil engineer working in Singapore. He was selected to go forward as the third finalist for the Grand Draw after buying chocolates at Changi Airport at The Cocoa Trees outlet for a client.
