Heinemann reopens at Cologne Bonn Airport

By Kevin Rozario |

Heinemann Duty Free’s store at Terminal 1 of Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany has had an “expansive facelift” and now features a walk-through concept where three separate zones have been combined into a single retail space of 930sq m. The store also incorporates the first shop-in-shop for famed German eau de Cologne, 4711.

The modernised shop now has more branded international goods and improved services such as free make-up consultations – including quick make-up sessions – plus spirits sampling at a spacious tasting bar.

According to Gebr Heinemann, following the 230sq m expansion, the shop now offers maximum clarity, special promotional spaces for new products and ranges, and even greater savings for the airport’s 9.01m passengers (down -2.2% in 2013).

GLOBAL FIRST FOR 4711

One international first is a new, 90sq m shop-in-shop specially developed to showcase 4711 (see below), the home-grown German eau de Cologne. The design reproduces the brand’s blue and gold colour scheme.

Travellers can browse all 4711 products on large white display units: the original 4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser scent, 4711 Acqua Colonia with natural essences, 4711 Nouveau Cologne, and new 4711 Wunder Wasser.

Commenting on the new store, CEO Michael Garvens (left in main picture) says: “This bigger, brighter, modernised duty free shop is a flagship for terminal one. The area that stages the world renowned 4711 Eau de Cologne is a special treat – its design combines the traditions of Cologne with the zeitgeist spirit.”

Gebr Heinemann’s history is strongly intertwined with Cologne Bonn Airport. Gunnar Heinemann (right in main picture), owner of Gebr Heinemann, says: “This airport is the birthplace of our airport retail business. After all, this is where we took a chance on duty free retail in 1969, a new business area to us at the time.”

Passengers preferring to leave their purchases behind and travel with less carry-on baggage, can take advantage of a pick-up service on EU flights: purchases are stored by Heinemann and deposited just before the return journey for convenient and secure collection. It is also possible to place orders online before leaving home by visiting www.heinemann-dutyfree.com.
