Retail bonanza at Moscow Domodedovo Airport as space doubles

By Kevin Rozario |

Russia’s busiest airport, Moscow Domodedovo (DME), is set to more than double its retail space as it starts to build the second phase of its airport complex to increase terminal capacity and service levels.

DME, which carried 30.76m passengers in 2013 [slightly ahead of Moscow rival Sheremetyevo with 29.26m] has been growing fast thanks to the speedy development of its route network and by attracting new airlines.

The Russian gateway has concluded a contract for the construction of the second segment of its passenger terminal, set for completion in December 2016 when it will nearly double in size to around 500,000 sq m.

As part of the enlargement, retail space will be drastically increased. The current 3,744sq m will gain an additional up to 4,070sq m, DME tells TRBusiness, to create a shopping floor of almost 7,800sq m when the project is finished (across landside and airside).

In the controlled area, retail will be housed in an atrium: a round part of the gallery with a glass dome with business lounges, cafés, bars, restaurants, plus duty free and travel retail shops around the perimeter.

TENDERS IN PREPARATION
Tenders are now being discussed by the airport management. Regarding timescale, DME says: “The tenders for the new retail area will be held as soon as the new segment of the passenger terminal is put into operation.”

Among the key shoppers expected to use the new airside retail facilities will be transfer passengers. They made up about 30% of total traffic in the first six months of 2014 (9.23m) and DME says that this share is expected to be stable next year.

The project for expanding the passenger terminal takes account of the existing architectural concept and is being designed using the principle ‘under one roof’. This is expected to make the best use of transfer opportunities within the complex with new facilities initially being put into operation in the eastern section.

In the new terminal segment there will be about 100 check-in counters and more than 40 self-service check-in kiosks. Additional aircraft parking stands with boarding bridges for superliners such as the Airbus 380 will also be built.

DME claims that its terminal is the largest in Russia made with glass on a polygonal structure (see main image) and this facade style will be continued in the new segment of the terminal. Domodedovo continues to be the base airport in Moscow for members of the largest global airline alliances, Star Alliance and Oneworld.
