WDFG opens redeveloped store at East Midlands Airport

Today, World Duty Free Group inaugurated its redeveloped store at East Midlands Airport; making better use of the retail space and introducing some ‘exciting’ new brands to the airport’s passengers.

It’s been a busy couple of months for the global travel retailer, which has opened or reopened newly configured stores in three major UK airports. The East Midlands opening follows the unveiling of WDFG’s largest walkthrough store at Stansted Airport – also owned by Manchester Airport Group (MAG) – last month, and another redeveloped store at Glasgow Airport, yesterday.

WDFG also opened [probably its most highly anticipated store] its new 2,092sq m duty and tax free store in Heathrow’s new £2.5bn T2 building on 25 September.

Beauty occupies one full side of the store’s walkway and brings a host of new brands to the airport.

Fred Creighton, WDFG’s UK Director of Retail Operations, commented on the newly configured East Midlands store, which started trading in September: “We are delighted with what we have achieved here at East Midlands, working in close partnership with the team at MAG. We have delivered a great looking store which will really enhance customers’ airport shopping experience.”

The liquor area, at 77sq m, located at the front of the store features tasting areas and an extensive range of spirits, wines and champagnes including Hennessy, Glenfiddich and Dom Pérignon. As in all its new and refurbished store developments, World Duty Free Group has installed a Tobacco Display Area (TDA) at 45sq m, to comply with current and future tobacco legislation.

With the largest allocation of space, at 310sq m, Beauty occupies one full side of the store’s walkway and brings a host of new brands to the airport, including leading skincare brands such as Elemis, Smashbox, Biotherm, GlamGlow and Molton Brown to name but a few.

Within the luxury area (120sq m) clearer sightlines have been created and some new brands added including Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford.

The Confectionery/Food area is 32sq m in size.

The confectionery area benefits from easy access from the main walkway, whilst tax-free is sited in a very visible area at the end of the passenger journey and close to the main till banks

Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer for the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) concludes: “We are proud to be launching this premium shopping experience for our passengers today. Our teams have worked closely with World Duty Free Group to bring a fresh look and feel to the airport and deliver on those products that our customers most want to see.

“East Midlands Airport has invested £12 million in redeveloping the terminal building, with the aim of improving the facilities available, and this is a significant step in improving the retail offering for our passengers.”
