Berlin Brandenburg Airport opening set for second half of 2017

By Charlotte Turner |

The Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH has pledged its full support to the Board of Management’s report, which proposes the opening of BER in the second half of 2017.

The decisive factor for the Supervisory Board was that the Board of Management was able to provide a ‘realistic schedule’ and show that all the parties involved in the construction process supported the schedule – in particular the planners, experts and contractors.

The airport operator’s Board of Management also reported that ‘verifiable milestones have been defined’.

“At each meeting of the Supervisory Board, the Board will require the Board of Management to provide concrete details of the degree to which the individual milestones have been achieved,” said the Supervisory Board in a statement.

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) was originally due to open on 3 June 2012, but a delay was announced in the month prior to opening due to fire security problems.

Since then, the airport has been plagued with problems forcing postponements to its opening. In March 2013, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) found a successor to sacked CEO, Rainer Schwarz, in former Air Berlin head Hartmut Mehdorn. The airport had been without a CEO since Schwarz’s departure in January 2013.

The announcement from the airport operating company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg hoped to draw a line under its past failings with the aim of starting afresh.

However, according to Reuters the project’s chief executive, Mehdorn has announced his resignation and is due to step down by 30 June, just 18 months after taking on the role.
