48% of Air France flights grounded

More serious industrial action at Air France this week means it will only be able to operate 48% of scheduled flights.

A new pilots’ strike begins today that is scheduled to run through to Monday 22 September as the airline is advising passengers not to try and travel during this time. The pilots say the strike will last for the full week. The airline’s pilots are said to be unhappy with cost cutting plans at the airline.

In a statement today, Air France said: “Due to the call for strike action by several pilot unions, from September 15 to 22, we expect important disruptions in our flights schedule as of Monday, September 15, 2014. Please note that Air France flights operated by other airlines, including HOP, KLM and Delta, are not affected by this strike.

“The application of the Diard law will allow us to have a more accurate estimation of the number of pilots declaring themselves on strike action 48 hours in advance. Our flight schedule will be adapted accordingly and published at latest 24 hours ahead of departure

“On September 15th, our flight schedule is updated. We expect to operate 48% of our flights. Last minute disturbances are not excluded. Before you go to the airport, it is recommended to verify the information on operated flights.”

Meanwhile, Air France CEO Frédéric Gagey has told French media that the industrial action could cost the carrier at least €10m ($13m) a day.
