Luxembourg to bid 10-year contracts

By Doug Newhouse |

Société de L’Aeroport de Luxembourg is planning to tender two 10-year duty free and F&B contracts ahead of November 2015 start dates.

Airport management says that successful bidders will work on a combination of fixed guaranteed lease rentals and additional fees, based on revenue levels.

Pre-qualification for all interested bidders is mandatory for these contracts, which are all available in English language versions from the airport’s support office. The deadline for submission for initial prequalification details is 9 January 2015 at 14:00 (GMT+1).

Currently, the airport’s terminal building has an annual capacity of 3m passengers and includes 26 check-in desks, 18 boarding gates and five passenger-boarding bridges. Underground parking also operates for more than 4,000 vehicles on four levels, feeding passengers directly into the terminal.

The terminal itself houses six shops, with two on the landside. One ‘Buy bye’ shop is accessible to all in the main airport hall. This features specialties from Luxembourg, such as chocolates by Namur and Oberweis, perfume and cosmetics and a selection of leading fashion labels. [Traditionally, Tuesdays are described as ‘Crazy Tuesdays’ at BUY bye City, bringing out special discounts of up to 70%-Ed].

On the airside there are three Buy bye Luxembourg stores offering perfumes and cosmetics, liquor and tobacco, a delicatessen, toys and local products, specialty chocolates and wines from Luxembourg.

A BUY bye fashion boutique also operates airside, featuring classic and sportswear designer brands, while BUY bye Accessories offers leading luggage brands, watches and jewellery, sunglasses and many other products.

’SYMBOLIC TRAFFIC THRESHOLD’

According to the airport’s annual report, management says that ‘a significant and symbolic threshold was crossed in 2013’ when the two millionth passenger passed through the airport for the very first time in the course of any year.

New routes were also opened by easyJet into Milan, London Gatwick and Lisbon, while Turkish Airlines opened up Istanbul) and Vueling commenced services to Barcelona.

The number of airlines operating scheduled flights to and from the airport also rose to 12, serving more than 88 destinations.

In total, the terminal played host to 2,197,497 passengers in 2013, an increase of 14.5% over 2012. The number of aircraft movements (including business jets) also increased, reaching 60,727 (+1.58%). More recently, in April 2014 a record 214,806 passengers passed through the airport in a single month, breaking all previous monthly records.

In a statement, airport management said: “If one extrapolates this figure, the year 2014 as a whole might well yield record passenger numbers in excess of 2.5m.”

In 2013 the Luxair BUY bye shop located in the departures hall was also redeveloped and enlarged to provide a new, more spacious area for customers and passengers.
