Heinemann opens at Sydney Airport today

By Doug Newhouse |

International passengers at Sydney Airport will be looked after by Heinemann Duty Free, which commences its seven and a half year contract from today.

Heinemann replaces Nuance – the long standing concessionaire of many years. It says it aims ‘to transform the duty free experience over the next 12 months’ with a new, ‘unique shopping experience’ comprising an extensive selection of attractively-priced brands alongside two dining concepts headed up by celebrity chef Luke Mangan.

The company says that its Sydney Airport operation will comprise a work force of more than 550 staff, as it prepares to invest more than A$60m ($47m) in its new location.

This will include six new concept Heinemann Duty Free shops selling P&C, L&T, confectionery and accessories as it takes shape over the next 12 months. Heinemann’s website will also offer core product offerings for pick-up at the stores.

Work has already begun on refitting the duty free stores and Heinemann is promising a minimum disruption for travellers. Three stores in departures and two stores in arrivals will be completed in January 2016, with a final arrivals store set to open by mid-2016.

The new Heinemann duty free shops are being designed by Gebr. Heinemann’s in-house design team in collaboration with the renowned Australian architectural firms Geyer and Lava. A sense of place will be incorporated – as is the Heinemann design style – featuring Sydney Harbour, the city’s beaches and some ‘laid-back sophistication’ as inspiration.

A WIDE RANGING SELECTION…

The retailer will also offer a range of premium fashion and accessories brands, a large selection of toys and games, local and international delicacies and a local Australian product section.

Electronic goods from Move by Dick Smith will round out the range of products on offer, in addition to the catering concepts from chef Luke Mangan and Heinemann’s Australian partners, Trippas White Group.

Commenting, Sydney Airport Managing Director and CEO Kerrie Mather said: “Heinemann is the world’s third largest travel retailer and we selected them for the exclusive brands and value they will provide to more than 13m passengers who travel internationally from Sydney Airport each year.

“We are looking forward to working with Heinemann over the next year to transform the airport’s duty free offering and create a retail experience that’s uniquely Sydney.”

Heinemann Asia Pacific CEO Max Heinemann added that the operation will offer significant savings on duty free items to its customers: “We’re going to give passengers a fantastic retail experience with outstanding service and exclusive international brands at attractive prices,” he said.

[As reported at the time, Heinemann Asia Pacific was appointed as the new duty free operator at Sydney Airport last September, with the new seven and a half year contract beginning today (17 February 2015) and running through to 31 August 2022.
