Hong Kong Airport recruits iconic local brands for new ‘retail zone’

By Charlotte Turner |

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is now inviting brands that ‘best reflect Hong Kong culture’ to submit tenders for specialty concept stores across nine categories, at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

HKIA is introducing a special ‘Hong Kong Concept’ retail zone at L7 Departures East Hall featuring a total of 14 shops spanning nine categories, all of which will carry ‘authentic and unique’ goods from local brands.

TRBusiness obtained an exclusive statement from an airport spokesperson: “Promoting Hong Kong’s unique culture of East meets West is an important element in enriching the passenger journey.  Featuring local iconic brands in a retail perspective allows passengers to bring a piece of Hong Kong home with them. Any brands that are originated in Hong Kong are welcome to join the tender.”

The nine categories are: Artisan Chocolate / Biscuits & Cookies / Tea / Coffee Beans; Casual Wear & Fashion Accessories; Chinese Festive Food or Bakery; Chinese Tonic Food & Dried Seafood; Contemporary Chinese Wear & Ware; Gifts & Souvenirs; Jewellery; Optical; and Preserved Fruit / Food & Confectionery.

“The new retail zone at HKIA aims to provide travellers with one-stop shopping experiences which reflect local Hong Kong culture, and allow visitors to discover and bring the best of Hong Kong back to their home country,” says the airport authority.

HKIA is connected to 180 destinations around the world, including 44 Chinese Mainland cities and it served 59.9m passengers in 2013.
