Three new Changi shops as Q1 pax +8% to 4.9m

Small Changi Airport shopper shotSingapore Changi Airport opened three more shops/outlets in March at the same time that passenger traffic grew by 8.1% to 4.9m and aircraft movements rose 4.6% to 30,130.

 

In the public area, Korean fashion brand Redeye began operations in Terminal 3’s Basement Two, while Bottega Veneta and Garrett Popcorn opened in the Terminal 2 transits areas and spa service Be Relax made its first Asia outlet debut in Terminal 3.

 

In a statement, the Changi Airport Group said: “Passenger traffic during the month was boosted by continued broad-based growth. In particular, Thailand, Malaysia and China registered double-digit increases for the third consecutive month. All of Changi Airport’s top 10 country markets grew by at least 4%.

“For the first quarter of 2016, Changi Airport registered 14.4m passengers, 9.9% higher than during the same period last year. Double-digit growth was registered for South East Asia, North East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East & Africa.

 

“Bangkok moved to the top of the cities list, accounting for over a million passenger movements. For the quarter, aircraft movements rose 5.6% to 88,790, while airfreight movements registered an increase of 3.3%, totalling 465,140 tonnes.”

 

In terms of new services, the 6 April saw Changi’s first direct air link to Fiji established, with Fiji Airways operating a twice-weekly service between Singapore and Nadi. Indonesian flag carrier Garuda also began its new 5-times weekly non-stop service to London-Heathrow (one-way) with a transit stop at Changi Airport on 31 March.

 

The Changi Airport Group said that as of 1 April 2016, more than 100 airlines operated at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to some 330 cities in about 80 countries and territories worldwide.
