Three new shops for Narita T3 LCC

By David Hayes |

Tokyo Narita International Airport’s low cost Terminal 3 will have three new duty free shops when it opens in March 2015.

Negotiations are also underway for fashion and watch brands to be displayed in these shops and boutiques at the location which is expected to be used by both Japanese and foreign LCC airlines.

The duty free shops will comprise 1,200sq m in area and offer a wide selection of goods across a good range of price points aimed at varying customer budgets.

FaSoLa Shops has been appointed to run all the T3 duty free shops and it is currently is finalising the new terminal’s duty free retail mix. The company is Narita Airport’s largest duty free retailer and part of NAA Retailing Corporation under Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA), which owns and operates the airport,

“NAA has asked us to operate the T3 duty free shops to increase their non-aeronautical business. We have a plan to create a sophisticated retail environment,” said Takumi Shimizu, Director of Product Division II in NAA Retailing Corporation’s FaSoLa Shops Merchandising Department, talking exclusively to TRBusiness.

“Departing passengers will pass the perfume and cosmetics area first, then the liquor and tobacco area; opposite them will be the Fashion Select shop and watches boutique, followed by our Akihabara souvenir store.

SELECTION PROCESS UNDERWAY

“We are negotiating with brands for Fashion Select. It will be an open display area; we expect to have over three fashion brands. For the watches boutique, we will have over three brands as well and a mixture of price points.”

The T3 duty free shop layout features a winding concourse that all departing passengers will follow to reach their flight gates. Immediately after leaving passport control, passengers will pass the 680sq m open plan duty free perfume, cosmetics, liquor and tobacco shop which will be situated on the left hand side of the concourse.

This will be followed by the adjacent 322sq m Akihabara souvenir shop selling food, confectionery, electrical appliances, toys, stationery, travel goods and various souvenirs.

A ‘walk-through sense’ of a large duty free store will be created by locating the combined 266sq m Fashion Select Shop and watch boutique on the right hand side of the concourse facing the core category duty free shop and the Akihabara souvenir store.

Shimizu explained that FaSoLa plans to use the same Akihabara Tax Free souvenir shop merchandise and display concept in T3 that has proved highly successful in Narita Airport’s terminals 1 and 2. In addition, FaSoLa intends that the T3 duty free perfume and cosmetics, and liquor and tobacco offer will match the high-end collections that the company sells in T1 and T2.

“Perfume and cosmetics will be a mixture of international and Japanese brands,” Shimizu said. “We will try to maintain the luxury image of our T1 and T2 perfume and cosmetics shops; we will have a luxury duty free shopping environment.

DOMINANT JAPANESE PAX PROFILE

“For liquor and tobacco our selection will be the same as in our T1 and T2 shops with Japanese sake on sale in the Akihabara souvenir shop.”

Japanese travellers are expected to account for a major share of passengers using T3, which will offer both international and domestic flights. “We expect the passengers to be mostly Japanese – about 50% will be leisure travellers, 15% will be businessmen and 35% other travellers,” Shimizu said.

“The main point is to keep a luxury image for the T3 duty free shopping area. We expect most international flights will be to destinations in Asia as T3 will be an LCC terminal.”

The T3 terminal building will be square in shape with two satellites for flight gates. Designed to handle 7.5m passengers a year and be able to accommodate up to 50,000 aircraft movements annually at full capacity, the three-storey terminal and its two storey satellites will have a total floor area covering 66,000sq m.

Flight check in counters will be located on the second floor of the LCC terminal with the arrival area on the first. Landside second floor facilities will include food courts and retail stores. International passengers will move by escalator up to the third floor for passport control and then enter the airside duty free shopping area.

Negotiations are continuing between NAA and various airlines to use Narita’s new LCC terminal.
