Xmas comes early to Changi Airport

By Doug Newhouse |

Singapore Changi Airport is once again getting into the Christmas spirit by transforming the airport into a ‘Disneyesque’ dream ‘magical holiday wonderland’.

Children (and adults alike) will find several sprinklings of Disney Christmas magic again from this month, reproducing the ever-popular theme seasonal celebrations at Changi as in years past.

Mickey Mouse and various other Disney characters will be in charge from (14 November 2014) today to 5 January 2015 as they take over various themed activities.

There will also be the opportunity for both airport visitors and passengers to collect a full set of six limited-edition Christmas plush toys, featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse in various country-themed costumes. Shoppers and diners are now able to purchase each of these plush toys for S$3 ($2.31) when they spend a minimum of S$60 ($46) in a single receipt in Changi Airport’s public area, or S$100 ($72) in the transit area.

The look of sheer wonder on kid’s faces is worth the effort alone.

CUDDLY TOY REWARDS FOR ADULTS

The Changi Airport Group (CAG) says a new pair will be launched for redemption every fortnight from now till 4 January 2015. In addition, the first 1,000 Changi Rewards members who accumulate a net spend of S$1,200 ($927) during the promotion period will receive a full set of six Disney plush toys for free.

As part of these seasonal celebrations, the Terminal 3 Departure Hall now features a three-storey, interactive Neuschwanstein Castle, reflecting the inspiration for the original Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty Castles featured in Disney theme parks and movies.

This apparently features a moving train experience from within, taking visitors through a mocked up German countryside. CAG adds that visitors will also be treated to daily multi-sensory shows, which mix captivating lights and songs with an engaging storyline. To complete the experience, Changi is topping it all off with a magical touch by taking control of the elements and making it snow in the terminal.

CAG will also be handing out ‘Christmas freebies’ during the holiday period and visitors at the Neuschwanstein Castle will be able to collect tickets before each show, which can also be used to exchange for a special Disney gift at the redemption booth. Roving performers will also be handing out goodies for guests throughout the airport at ‘various times’ of the day.

THEMED COUNTRY SCENES

‘Picturesque displays’ of snowy Swiss chalets (T3 transit area), traditional Japanese cottages (T2 transit area) and a Broadway-styled New York City (T1 transit area) will also feature, alongside Spanish costumed larger-than-life Mickey and Minnie Mouse topiaries (T2 public area) at five-metres tall.

A Mickey Mouse Club House Bouncy Playground will also be located in the Terminal 3 Departure Hall and kids will also be able to take part in an adventure trove, cruising down a three-metre high slide, bouncing off sticky Velcro walls and leaping into the colourful depths of the ever-popular ball pit.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse will also be holding personal meet-and-greet sessions, alongside various other activities, which include  interactive storytelling, stage performances, professional ventriloquist puppeteers, French visual performers and contact jugglers. Roving performers will also appear at weekends, including the Gingerbread Man, Toy Soldier, Drummer Boy, Fairy Princess and Candy Cane Stilt-walkers.

A Community Art Wall project will also be featured at Terminal 3 where kids can channel their creativity onto tile-pieces before placing them up on the community wall to form part of a larger art mural and there will also be ‘a special Christmas micro-site’ for users to send Disney-themed festive greetings from Changi to their friends and families around the world. Each time a ‘customisable’ Disney-themed e-card is sent, the user will stand a chance to win a full set of six Mickey and Minnie Mouse plush toys.
