Dufry opens Gap at Málaga Airport

By Doug Newhouse |

Dufry has opened Spain’s first near-300sq m GAP store at Málaga Costa del Sol Airport and the world’s largest located at any airport.

The new outlet currently offers classic Gap clothing styles through all of the Gap, GapKids and babyGap collections and a grand opening ceremony is now planned. This will be attended by Dufry CEO Julián Díaz, Gap International SVP Stefan Laban, Spanish Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor (after her tour around the airport commercial area) and José Manuel Vargas, Chairman of Spanish airport operator AENA.

The Gap opening is the very first in Spain and Dufry now has plans to open another four under its agreement with Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) at the Spanish airports of Ibiza, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Norte and Tenerife Sur.

Málaga Airport is Spain’s fourth largest and handled almost 14m passengers last year with the vast majority originating mainly from Spain, the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

BENEFITING FROM AENA INVESTMENT
Dufry also acknowledged the significant invest AENA has made in renovating the commercial, restaurant and lounge areas of many of its major airports in the country.

Commenting, Julián Díaz said: “Dufry is very proud that GAP has entrusted us with opening its first store in Spain, the worldwide largest in an airport. It is a pleasure for us to work with one of the world’s major fashion brands.”

Stefan Laban from Gap International added: “We are thrilled to bring Gap’s casual American style to more customers in Europe. Given the high affinity and brand awareness towards Gap with the Spanish consumers, we felt partnering with Dufry to create branded shopping experiences in the Malaga airport, as well as airports across Spain, is a terrific next step in our global expansion plans.”

Following last year’s acquisition of the Nuance Group, Dufry is now clearly the world’s leading airport retailer, operating some 1,700 stores at airports, in train stations, on cruise ships, at seaports and in other tourist spots in over 60 countries.
