More than 250 flights cut in London as fog wreaks havoc

By Doug Newhouse |

Top britishairways-planesUPDATED. Minus six-degree temperatures, combined with thick fog across southern England is causing major disruption, with hundreds of services cancelled at Heathrow Airport yesterday and today and more than 100 at London City Airport.

Around 100 flights (mostly short-haul European and domestic) were cancelled at Heathrow yesterday (Monday 23 January) after mandatory air traffic control restrictions were introduced and the fog was still present in the early hours of today in South East England leading to yet another 100 flight cancellations.

At one point yesterday, visibility levels were reduced to less than 100 yards, while the UK Meteorological Office subsequently offered hope that fog might lift today, but it has been slow progress. [One of the main reasons for the cancellations is the need to maintain longer distances between aircraft in bad weather-Ed].

In a statement this morning, Heathrow Airport said: “Foggy weather across London and the South East is expected on Tuesday 24 January and some passengers may experience disruption to their journey as a result.”

British Airways also added that it is reducing’ its flight schedules today and it is advising any potential passengers to check the status of their flights before travelling.
