Newcastle recruits two new key directors

By Doug Newhouse |

Newcastle International Airport Ltd (NIAL) has announced the arrival of Nick Jones as Finance Director and John Irving as Business Development Director – a new role in the airport company.

Jones has joined the airport board from Aesica Pharmaceuticals where he was Chief Financial Officer, after a prior position with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He replaces Simon Fisher who has left to become Finance Director at the Banks Group. Meanwhile, John Irving joins after seven years as Finance Director at Newcastle United Football Club, following a prior spell with Proctor and Gamble.

Commenting on the appointments, CEO David Laws says they come at an important time: “Passenger numbers are growing, and the business is performing strongly, making Newcastle International one of the most successful regional airports in the UK.”

He said the airport has won a number of awards for customer service and has also just completed a £14m ($21.8m) enlargement and modernisation of its departure lounge [click here for details of its new World Duty Free walkthrough shop: http://www.trbusiness.com/regional-news/europe/wdf-reopens-style-conscious-newcastle-store/77627].

Laws continued: “Now is the right time to strengthen and diversify our senior team. I have worked closely with Simon Fisher over a number of years and I would like to thank Simon for the fantastic contribution he has made to the business.

“In Nick Jones we have secured the right person to fill this important role and ensure that we take the business even further forward. The creation of a new Business Development Director role is a signal of our intention to continue to expand the business, and diversify further. John Irving has an excellent track record at the football club and I am confident he will be a strong addition to the team.”
