Fraport hits new 13m passenger record in Q1
By Doug Newhouse |
Frankfurt Airport set a new passenger record in the first quarter of 2016, handling a total of almost 13m passengers – exceeding the previous record set last year by 417,000 (+3.3%).
Airport management said: “The traffic performance was positively impacted by the timing of the Easter holidays and an additional leap day, along with the non-recurrence of strikes which occurred in the same period of the previous year.”
Meanwhile, in March 2016, 4.8m passengers used Frankfurt Airport (+3.9%), exceeding the previous March 2015 record by approximately 180,000 passengers.
Fraport added: “The strong performance was helped by the timing of the Easter holidays at the end of March, as well as the non-recurrence of strike and weather-related flight cancellations that occurred in March 2014. With 37,503 takeoffs and landings, aircraft movements remained at last year’s level (up 0.8%).”
By contrast, Fraport AG’s international portfolio reported varying performance across the Group’s airports during the first quarter of 2016.
Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport welcomed 245,466 passengers in the first three months of the year – an increase of 3.9% while Lima Airport handled almost 4.5m passengers representing a traffic rise by 11.5%.
In addition, Varna and Burgas airports combined welcomed around 117,000 passengers, achieving passenger growth of +20.9%.
Meanwhile, passenger numbers at Turkey’s Antalya Airport and Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, Russia, decreased by 2.8% to just under 2.4m passengers and 6.2% to 2.3m passengers respectively.
In addition, Fraport said that almost one million passengers used Hanover Airport (HAJ) in northern Germany during the first quarter of the current year (+3.4%), while Xi’an Airport in China welcomed 8.6m passengers – an increase of 13%.
