Ryanair cancels 166 flights for 30,000+ pax

By Doug Newhouse |

001 ryanair-aircraft-12Europe’s busiest airline Ryanair has cancelled 166 flights set to use French airspace today, in what is the 12th air traffic control strike in France in 13 weeks.

A total of 30,000 Ryanair passengers flying to or from French airports have had their flights cancelled today and 100,000 others – which use or touch on French airspace – are expected to be severely disrupted. Several other carriers’ schedules have also been badly impacted. Airports in several countries are also affected, including Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Italy and Sweden.

Meanwhile, British Airways is expected to cancel more than 60 flights from Heathrow and Gatwick this morning, while Aéroports de Paris – along with other European airports and many other airlines – are warning European passengers to check the status of their flights before setting off for the airport.

AIRLINES AND AIRPORTS SUFFERING

This news comes in a bad month for cancellations, considering yesterday’s statement from Europe’s second largest low-cost carrier, easyJet.

It reported an unprecedented 1,061 cancellations in its third trading quarter due to the French ATC strike and other factors, including runway and congestion issues at Gatwick Airport and severe weather conditions experienced earlier in the period.

Commenting on this latest major disruption, Ryanair spokesman Kenny Jacobs said: “It is time for action by the European Commission following this latest French ATC strike aimed at disrupting as many travel plans as possible.

“The frequency of these strikes, right in the middle of the holiday season only serves to underline how urgent action is required to help reduce the impact of these strikes.”

Apart from this latest round of strikes, there is more bad news for all UK airports following the recent declaration to the Wall Street Journal by Ryanair management that it will no longer introduce any new aircraft on routes to and from the UK – following the UK decision to leave the European Union.

If the airline carries out this threat then it will have a major impact on UK airport finances, since Ryanair is already both Europe and the world’s biggest international airline, with UK airports alone handling more than 40m passengers flying with the airline last year.
