Hamburg traffic falls -1.4%

By Doug Newhouse |

Hamburg Airport has echoed tough market sentiments expressed by other German airports, pointing to a challenging year in 2013 which translated into a 1.4% fall in departing and arriving passenger numbers to 13.5m in 2013.Seven days of strikes, three days of severe storms and a long hard winter at the beginning of the year didn’t help, along with the reduction in services by some airlines. Considering this, airport management says it was a ‘satisfactory result’. On average, airport management said that 37,000 passengers passed through Hamburg Airport each day in 2013, with a daily average of 394 aircraft movements (197 take-offs and 197 landings). This year, the airport is hoping to reach 14m passengers with the addition of new services from Germanwings, easyJet, Norwegian and Germania.
