AAHK issues major tender for huge 350,000sq m SKYCITY
By Doug Newhouse |
Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has issued an open tender for its SKYCITY commercial development comprising a massive 350,000sq m of retail, dining and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities for both visitors and local residents.
Airport Authority says: “Bigger and more visionary than similar projects in Hong Kong, SKYCITY will be the largest retail complex in town, featuring an era of experiential shopping, together with an array of diverse dining options that re-invent and celebrate the art of gastronomy, as well as mega-scale and advanced entertainment facilities.”
ACCOMPLISHED DEVELOPERS WANTED…
AAHK is now effectively looking for ‘accomplished developers across the globe’ to partake in developing the large new commercial destination which it envisages will be ‘world class’ when complete. This will also feature hotels and offices.
The authority claims the new facilities will offer ‘unparalleled business opportunities in a premier location’ situated next to Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) which handles more than 70m international passengers a year.

Unlike most airport locations, Hong Kong International Airport has the land to accommodate such a project, but Hong Kong will need relations between it and the Mainland to remain positive from a commercial visitation standpoint. Especially if it is to take advantage of its proximity to the Pearl River Delta catchment area. As is well documented, Hong Kongers have not always been hugely welcoming when it comes to Chinese Mainland fellow nationals.
HUGE CUSTOMER VOLUME POTENTIAL
As is well known, HKIA is also one of the world’s busiest business aviation hubs where more than 100 airlines operate around 1,100 daily flights to around 190 destinations worldwide.
AAHK management says that half of the world’s population actually lives within a five-hour flight of Hong Kong International Airport, making the airport a very convenient hub for a huge number of people across the region.

Just as importantly – and especially looking forward – AAHK also points to the cross-boundary infrastructures currently being built which are designed to enhance the connection between HKIA and the huge Pearl River Delta region.
Incorporating this catchment area along with large volumes of other airport users is a customer base that AAHK believes will help maximise the SKYCITY’s potential. Especially considering that this facility will be within a two-hour drive of approximately 60m consumers’ people with a regional GDP of around HK$7 trillion.
100M ANNUAL PAX AT HKIA SOON…
The annual passenger traffic at HKIA is also projected to increase to over 100m once the new Three-Runway System is ready to come into full operation.
Based on all of this, AAHK has set a tender closing date of 14.30 (HK time) 2 February (Friday) 2018.
Any individuals or companies wishing to contact AAHK can do so using the following details: General questions: (852) 2183 3562 (Mr. Wong); Email: [email protected]; Fax: (852) 2182 3562; Website: www.skycityhongkong.com; Address: HKIA Tower, 1 Sky Plaza Road, Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau, Hong Kong.
