AOT resignations in Bangkok
By Administrator |
The President of Airports of Thailand (AOT) Chotisak Asapaviriya, Suvarnabhumi Airport's Director Somchai Sawasdeepol and AOT's Commercial Director Sombat Khunprasert have all ‘resigned’ following the problems at the new $4.1bn airport.
While Chotisak cited poor health as the reason for his resignation late last week, few are in any doubt that all three have been dismissed in an effort to point the blame anywhere but at the military-led ‘government’ which inherited the multiple problems at Suvarnabhumi after last year's coup.
The sackings also come in the wake of government embarrassment after several domestic carriers have been forced to use the old Don Muang Airport while repairs are carried out at Suvarnabhumi.
Kanlaya Phakakrong, Vice-President in charge of planning and finance is now the new acting interim President, with a more permanent appointment said to be scheduled for two months' time. At the same time Somchai has been given a junior post and is replaced by Serirat Prasutanond, Deputy Director for Regional Airports' Operations.
As expected, AOT is also reviewing several contracts including the 10-year security concession which was awarded to the Loxley-ICTS consortium.
AOT is also requesting that duty free concessionaire King Power International hand back some space and forward alternative suggestions for the location of some shops by February 12. KPI has already made its position clear that it has already paid – or undertaken to pay – for every square metre of space it occupies at the airport.
Meanwhile, a report in last week's Bangkok Post suggests that the Engineering Council of Thailand (ECT) has found cracks in the airport's taxi ways which cover an area of around 97,000 square metres. It also adds that they are serious and could endanger aircraft.
