Cartier has unveiled a luxury, three-storey boutique at the new cdf Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex in Hainan.
The shopping complex, which opened in October, is dubbed the ‘largest single duty free shop’ on the planet.
Cartier’s 963 sqm boutique builds on the Maison’s longstanding partnership with China Duty Free Group (CDFG) and reinforces its ‘ambition to offer a new era of luxury retail experiences on the island of Hainan’.
The design is inspired by the natural landscape of Haikou (reflecting the destination’s blue sky, sealife and lush vegetation) as well as the craftsmanship of the Maison.
“Echoing the qualitative development of the island, we are thrilled to unveil Cartier’s second boutique in Hainan at the ground-breaking Haikou International Duty-Free Shopping Complex with our valued partner, China Duty Free Group,” said Virginie Martignac, Cartier Global Travel Retail Director.
“The dynamism of the island has been a great source of inspiration for Cartier and the flagship truly sets a new standard for luxury retail experiences and services.
“The boutique marries together the treasured cultures of France and China through a joint appreciation of craftsmanship, creativity and individuality, and we look forward to welcoming our clients here.”
The boutique bridges Chinese and French cultures by aesthetically blending the Cartier panther emblem with elements of Chinese mythology.

Framed by custom-made terracotta tiles, the grand façade of the boutique commands attention (see photo above).
Once inside, clients are surrounded by décor featuring local marine flora and fauna (painted carps ‘swim’ on the walls and sea waves ‘flow’ over a woven leather wall).
On the ground floor, visitors can discover the Maison’s most iconic jewellery collections, as well as the latest novelties and creative jewellery lines.
A curved alcove under the staircase sets the stage for seasonal animations.
The prestige area is adorned by an original artwork by a Parisian artist featuring a dragon holding a flaming pearl in its mouth, symbolising longevity and good fortune, complementing the Maison’s most precious jewellery and diamond creations.
To continue on their journey of discovery, visitors can ascend the staircase (complete with its bespoke chandelier) to the first floor.
There, they can discover the men’s, unisex and engagement universes.
The men’s area is highlighted by a bespoke artwork from Parisian lacquerer, that depicts the Cartier panther at the foot of a palm tree.
To the left, the engagement area is decorated with lotus flower petal motifs, which symbolise love, purity and happiness.
On the right, the unisex area shines a light on Cartier timepieces.
In addition, there is a VIP pod, which welcomes clients to discover more about their favourite products in a cosy and exclusive environment.
Accessible by elevator, the boutique’s top floor houses Cartier’s first High End Salon in Hainan.
This is described as an ‘exclusive space’ where prestige clients discover the Maison’s most exquisite jewellery and watch creations.
Characterised by natural materials, such as bamboo and planters, as well as decorative plants motifs that represent tropical Haikou, the salon is said to exude a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
A versatile space, the parlour houses a private gallery in which to view Cartier pieces, as well as an intimate bar area and two VIP lounges. It also plays host to personalised events and celebration experiences.
