DFS ‘closes online-offline gap’ with WeChat facial recognition technology

T-Galleria-BeautyWeChat Facial Recognition Payment is now available to Chinese customers shopping with DFS Group after the luxury travel retailer became the first merchant to enable the platform outside of mainland China.

T Galleria Beauty by DFS in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay is due to receive the technology after DFS received approval from the Macau Special Administrative Region to pilot 10 devices at T Galleria by DFS, Macau, City of Dreams in September.

“Facial recognition payment has become the predominant form of digital payment among key retail market players, further closing the gap between the online and offline experience,” said Zac Coughlin, Chief Financial Officer, DFS Group.

“We are immensely proud to become the very first global merchant outside mainland China to enable WeChat Facial Recognition Payment, as part of our commitment to constantly adapt to the ever-evolving needs of our customers.”

In implementing the technology, shoppers now simply look into a camera at till-point to complete payments rather than needing to scan a QR code. This speeds up transactions and reduces customer waiting times.

WeChat Facial Recognition Payment is available only to customers with a valid Chinese form of identification.
