DFS marks International Women’s Day with celebration of art in Sydney

On 12 March, leading luxury travel retailer, DFS Group transformed one of its stores in Sydney into what it describes as an ‘artistic celebration of the female form’, commemorating International Women’s Day (8 March), in partnership with renowned contemporary art dealer Lyons Gallery.

The exclusive evening event at T Galleria by DFS, Sydney – located in the historic Rocks area – welcomed VIP customers, media guests, representatives of the global art world and a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting women in Australia.

DFS was inspired by the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, ‘Break the Bias’, as it transformed the ground floor of T Galleria by DFS, Sydney into an art gallery with an array of spectacular contemporary artworks staged amid the store’s offering of luxury products.

Each canvas was selected for the event by Lyons Gallery Founder and Creative Director Darryn Lyons and was either created by or inspired by strong and iconic women.

Pieces included a limited-edition photograph of Audrey Hepburn by Norman Parkinson, a silver gelatin print of model Kate Moss by Terry O’Neill signed by both the artist and the model, and Helmut Newton’s famous photograph of jewellery designer Elsa Peretti in 1975 against a backdrop of New York.

Also in attendance at the event was Nancy Wang, President of Australia Women United Association, an organisation dedicated to protecting and supporting underprivileged and vulnerable women.

Ms Wang took the opportunity to speak on behalf of women in the community who experience prejudice due to financial or domestic challenges, calling for greater awareness and an end to unfair bias.

Attendees at the event also had the opportunity to interact with one of Lyons Gallery’s featured artists, celebrity photographer Gary Heery who regaled guests with his recollections of shooting many famous figures.

In a surprise twist, Gary presented Ms. Wang with a signed print of one of his early photographs of the singer Madonna taken for her debut album cover in 1983, spontaneously inviting guests to bid for the exceptional piece with proceeds going to Australia Women United Association.

Guests were also able to express their own creativity by contributing to an original artwork by a local illustrator known as Soy Street.

As well as creating unique portraits for attendees throughout the evening, the artist guided them to add the finishing touches to a colourful canvas depicting women of the world, titled ‘The Future is Female’. The finished piece was also auctioned on the evening to support Australia Women United Association.

All three floors of T Galleria by DFS, Sydney were open exclusively for invited customers throughout the evening, welcoming them to shop the store’s meticulously curated assortment of luxury products across fashion, watches and jewellery and beauty. Sydney has experienced a surge in tourism following the recent reopening of Australia’s borders to all international travellers, and the store is poised for a significant increase in customer traffic over the coming months.

“It is our honour to commemorate International Women’s Day with this exclusive evening of fine art and luxury products with our valued customers here in Sydney,” said Prashant Mahboobani, DFS Vice President of Operations for Australia and New Zealand.

“DFS is committed to diversity in all its forms, and we are proud to celebrate the many strong and impressive women we serve as well as employ in our stores. I encourage all of us to #BreakTheBias, today and every day.”
