The partnership between Hainan Development Holdings (HDH) and Dufry Group has come to fruition after both opened their first shop at Haikou’s Mova Mall on Hainan island on 31 January.

Dufry last month signed a strategic cooperation agreement with HDH to develop opportunities in Hainan, including a new 38,920sq m downtown duty free shop at Mova Mall due to open in phases.

Opening on the eve of China’s Spring Festival, the Global Duty Free (GDF) Plaza offers customers a choice of internationally renowned brands and local premium labels across all categories, such as perfume & cosmetics, food and confectionery, wine & spirits and sunglasses.

In addition, a reserve-and-collect service enables customers to pre-order items online.

The new store on Hainan island arrives in the lead up to China’s Spring Festival.

Once completed, the shop will spread across two areas of Mova Mall – Aquarius and Capricorn.

In phase two and three, top luxury and lifestyle brands will bolster the mix to total more than 350 brands.

The opening at Mova Mall, a major shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment complex that welcomed 22 million visitors in 2019, marks the first time that Dufry has been involved in a duty free operation in Mainland China.

In addition to supplying global brands, Dufry will share its travel retail operational experience with HDH.

The new store strengthens Dufry’s existing footprint in China; the travel retail giant has run travel retail businesses in the country for many years including duty paid shops at Shanghai Hongqiao and Chengdu Airports. It’s presence also extends to Hong Kong and Chengdu.

Julián Díaz, CEO, Dufry Group commented: “We are proud to see the first shop of our collaboration with Hainan Development Holdings now welcoming customers, who enjoy shopping in this attractive environment offering unique experiences.

“The combination of Hainan Development Holding’s in-depth understanding of the local market with Dufry’s global duty free expertise, customer behaviour insights and access to all the renowned global brands creates a unique combination of skills contributing to the successful development of this promising business.

“We are looking forward to continue our collaboration with HDH and identify further duty free opportunities in the fast-growing Hainan market.”
