Indonesian quakes kill 70
By Administrator |
Two earthquakes measuring more than six on the richter scale have hit Indonesia's island of Sumatra this morning, with reports that 70 people have lost their lives amidst widespread damage.
The first quake hit west Sumatra at 10:49am local time northeast of Padang city and a second followed two hours later, with reports indicating that the shocks were sufficiently severe to cause tremors as far away as Singapore, where downtown office buildings shook but sustained no damage.
Thankfully, both earthquakes occurred inland removing any danger of any repeat of the terrible tsunamis that hit the region in 2004 killing nearly a quarter of a million people.
