Fleming_President19Lagardère Travel Retail Head of Strategic Development for Asia Grant Fleming has been elected as the new President of APTRA, TRBusiness has learned.

The appointment was confirmed in an election following an AGM that took place yesterday (Wednesday 15 May).

He replaces Andrew Ford, who announced in Monday’s opening conference plenary his intention to stand down as President having served in the role since 2017, stating he was ‘moving on’.

In addition, APTRA appointed a new 12-strong Board (see below).

Speaking exclusively to TRBusiness, Christina Oliver, Executive Director, APTRA said: “Grant previously served as treasurer on the board so knows APTRA and knows how to handle the issues that we face.

“At APTRA we are talking about forward momentum so I am looking forward to the weeks and months ahead.”

The APTRA Board (left to right) Alain Maingreaud, TFWA; Jonathan Holland, Jonathan Holland & Associates; Karl Marnane, Butlers Chocolates; Gabriela Steiner-Zajax, Lindt; Julia Bauer, ITL Pacific (HK Limited); Grant Fleming, Lagardère Travel Retail (President); Andrew Gardiner, Melbourne Airport; Sunil Tuli, King Power HK; Pan Har Ying, JTI (Treasurer); Ryan Hill, Bommidala (Secretary); and Stephane Geffroy, Kansai Airport; and [not present in photo] Teo Chew Hoon, Changi Airport.

Oliver, who assumed the role last December revealed Ford has stepped down from the Board. She added: “He was part of APTRA for a long time and we are going to miss him. I call him the rolodex of the industry as he knows absolutely everyone.

“It was a pleasure to work alongside Andrew and a great insight for me to delve into travel retail with him.”

Grant Fleming commented: “It is a great honour to be elected President of APTRA and, in taking up this important role, I commit to continuing the excellent work that has been done by my predecessors to sustain and develop the duty free & travel retail industry in the Asia Pacific region.

“I wish to convey the thanks and appreciation of the Board and our 116 corporate members to Andrew, who has led the Association with energy and dedication over the last two years in addition to several years as an active Board Member.

“APTRA has achieved some significant successes in the field of advocacy and research and I am determined to continue the forward momentum.”

Outgoing President Andrew Ford added: “APTRA has put in place an archive of solid research to underpin our work, including the forthcoming Economic Impact Report Asia Pacific which provides essential data about the vital role our industry plays in local and national economies.

“In passing the baton to Grant and the new Board, I am confident that the Association is in good hands and the progress we have made to date will be used to build the foundations for a strong and successful future.”

During the TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference, APTRA once again hosted its successful Airport Forum at Singapore Changi Airport (12 May), attended by more than 40 delegates from 14 airports.

The Forum included a series of presentations, plus a tour of The Jewel.

Meanwhile, the APTRA KPMG Insights Seminar (15 May) drew 45 delegates
