Lotte DF taps into increased demand for health foods with new promotion

Lotte Duty Free is introducing various discounts to take advantage of the growing demand for health foods or Health Functional Food (HFF) – as they are classified in Korea – in the wake of the pandemic.

Attitude to healthcare is shifting from treatment to prevention, especially among young people, according to leading Korean travel retailer, Lotte Duty Free.

Health Functional Food (HFF) is described by the Korea Health Supplements Association (KHSA) as food products manufactured (including processing) using functional ingredients that are nutritious and ‘helpful’ to the body.

Products that help to improve immunity and prevent ageing are currently in the spotlight and according to the KHSA, the dry-foods market last year was worth KRW5.45 trillion, up 42% in five years from KRW3.556.3 trillion in 2016.

Lotte held a health and wellbeing promotion in September last year.

In the fourth quarter of last year, sales of HFF, such as red ginseng and vitamins at Lotte Duty Free also increased by about 82.8% compared to the first quarter.

Lotte Duty Free launched its online mall ‘LDF BUY’ in June of last year to target the health functional food market and create a new business model in the aftermath of Covid-19, facilitating numerous promotions in the process.

In December, sales nearly doubled compared to the previous month thanks to the year-end discount.

“In order to repay the customer’s support for LDF BUY, this time, we are holding a New Year’s discount event,” said Lotte.

Until 31 January, products such as Omega 3, Vitamin, Propolis Toothpaste, and Manuka Honey from global brands such as Blackmores, GNC, and Natural Life can be purchased with up to 55% discount.

Coupons will need to be presented to receive a discount of up to KRW 3,000.

“LDF BUY sales products are directly sourced by Lotte Duty Free’s Australian subsidiary, so you can trust and purchase famous health functional foods in Australia and the United States, and you can receive them within seven days on average without leaving the country,” added Lotte.

A Lotte Duty Free official said: “I hope this promotion will be a good opportunity for customers who are preparing gifts ahead of the Lunar New Year’s holidays.”
