Milan Bergamo Airport retail expansion

The airport has introduced an additional 2,000sq m of retail space.

Milan Bergamo Airport has unveiled an expanded duty free store, a new security area, and new gates – all designed to enhance capacity and elevate the passenger experience ahead of the 2026 summer season.

As part of the upgrade, the airport has introduced an additional 2,000sq m of retail space, making the duty free area three times larger than before, and incorporating a wider assortment of international brands.

The new security screening area, covering 3,500sq m, is designed to deliver faster, smoother and more intuitive processes for travellers, according to the company. The facility is equipped with 14 security lanes featuring technology that allows passengers to leave liquids and electronic devices inside their bags.

The new security zone incorporates abundant natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting. This contributes to Milan Bergamo Airport’s broader sustainability commitments, while supporting the airport’s efforts to lower energy consumption.

The terminal expansion includes two new non-Schengen gates, increasing the airport’s total to 27 gates. With the new configuration effective from summer 2026, Milan Bergamo Airport will operate 16 Schengen and 11 non-Schengen gates (compared to the current 15 Schengen and 12 non-Schengen positions), adding 1,000sq m to the boarding area.

In addition to the new retail space, the terminal expansion incorporates new gates and a new security area.

SACBO Director of Commercial Aviation Giacomo Cattaneo commented: “With this expansion, we are offering our passengers one of the most advanced and passenger-friendly security systems in Europe. The combination of cutting-edge technology, intelligent passenger flow management and a bright, spacious environment represents a major step forward in comfort, efficiency and sustainability at Milan Bergamo Airport.”

In related news, construction is underway on the new Airport Service Centre, which will include a 4-star Hilton Garden Inn hotel and a conference facility, scheduled to open in winter 2026.

In parallel, work progresses on the rail link that will connect Milan Bergamo Airport directly with Milan city centre in just 45 minutes. The line is expected to be fully operational by December 2026.
