Narita planning Terminal 1 shop openings in 2018

By Luke Barras-hill |

NaritaJapan’s Tokyo Narita International Airport is set to unveil its new airside shops located primarily in the Central Building on the third floor of Terminal 1 in 2018, TRBusiness can reveal.

Specific details of the upcoming developments, including the volume of units, sizes and the merchandise mix, are still being kept confidential.

However operator Narita International Airport Airport Corporation (NAA) has indicated in its ‘Innovative Narita 2018’ Mid-term Management Plan the need to strengthen the airport’s revenue base by linking travellers, including international passengers visiting Japan, to retail sales.

The Management Plan says the shops will exhibit “innovation and contemporary flair” that “project the distinctive character of Japan and Narita Airport, and offer product lineups that will satisfy our customers, including products only available at Narita Airport”.

The new shop openings in T1 form part of a wider plan to renovate the airport’s existing terminal spaces, with renovation work continuing on the ‘Airport Mall’, situated landside on the fourth floor of Terminal 2.

NARITA SPOTLIGHT AT TFWA APAC SHOW

As reported, NAA Retailing Corporation opened four new brand boutiques in the airport’s ‘Fifth Avenue’ shopping mall – located after outbound passport control in Terminal 2 – last year.

The first Prada boutique in Japan slated to open in late December followed debuts from Chanel, including a fragrance and beauty store, and Bottega Veneta in November.

Delegates attending next month’s TFWA Asia Pacific Conference will be offered the chance to attend a ‘Rediscovering Japan’ workshop, in which NAA’s retail developments will be put more firmly in the spotlight.

The expected workshop line-up includes NAA Senior Vice President Hideki Hayashida; Nobuo Nabiska, President of skincare brand The Ginza; and Tadashi Shimura, President of the Japan Association of Travel Agents.
