New security rules to arrive in weeks
By Administrator |
Thailand is to introduce stricter restrictions related to liquids/gels in passengers' hand luggage on all flights within the next few weeks, according to a report in today's Bangkok Post.
Thailand will follow the proposed measures set out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in its guidelines earlier this year.
Chaisak Angkasuwan, Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) confirmed the move in comments to the newspaper today, after a draft of the new rules has been forwarded to the Transport Ministry.
The newspaper said it was ‘unclear’ how King Power International Group would work with the new rules which obviously will have an impact on sales to passengers who are transferring on other flights after leaving Thailand. KPIG operates all of the duty free stores at Thailand's four international airports at Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hat Yai.
The matter may be further complicated by the fact that Airports of Thailand (AoT) has technically ‘terminated’ KPIG's contract for an alleged breach of rules, even though the legality of AoT's action is still in question.
The security model described by the newspaper mirrors that being introduced at Singapore Changi Airport on May 8 which is, in itself, a carbon copy of the ICAO recommendations, although Changi has introduced gate room deliveries for passengers bond for Australia.
