Shanghai China Century MKII details

By Doug Newhouse |

Registration is open for TFWA and APTRA’S second China’s Century Conference at the Shanghai Jing An Shangri-La Hotel (10-12 March 2015).

This follows last year’s very successful event in Beijing which was described by some commentators as ‘the best industry conference ever’. This year’s conference is supported officially by influential trade organisation Shanghai Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (SAEFI).

Several interesting speakers have confirmed their participation, including China Duty Free Group Chairman Peng Hui, and senior executives from the airports of Shenzhen, Guangzhou Baiyun and Chongqing.

Also, Beijing Airport company Capital Airports Holding Co will explain the opportunities for retail at the new Beijing Daxing Airport, which is expected to open in 2018 as one of the world’s largest when it is complete.

The conference will also study the Chinese market beyond the airport. China National Service Corp President Li Can, whose company operates downtown duty free stores catering to returning Chinese nationals – including a new retail complex in Shanghai – will explain how efforts by the relatively new government to promote domestic tourism will benefit his company and the industry.

TFWA adds: “Meanwhile, as part of the Chinese government’s drive to promote China as a tourist destination – and to encourage Chinese citizens to take holidays at home – the Jihua Park project will see the development of 35 new leisure, sports and shopping resorts across the country.

Last year’s conference in Beijing was extremely well attended.

OPPORTUNITIES IN AND OUT OF CHINA

“The TFWA China’s Century Conference will hear from the manager of the commercial aspect of the project, Luca Bastagli Ferrari, CEO of retail management company Arco Retail, who will explain why the Jihua Park project is one of the biggest opportunities for brands and travel retailers in China.

“Shaun Rein, Managing Director China Market Research Group and author of The End of Copycat China: the Rise of Creativity, Innovation and Individualism in Asia, will share his insights on the future direction of the Chinese economy and the implications for those selling to Chinese consumers.”

TFWA adds that other topics for exploration and debate during the conference will be the Shanghai Free Trade Zone complex designed to facilitate and encourage foreign investment; new developments in the duty paid market; the influence of China’s social networks; plus new approaches in marketing to Chinese consumers in the mobile age.

Delegates will also receive key findings from research commissioned by APTRA and conducted by specialist agency m1nd-set, into the behaviour, tastes, perceptions and preferences of the Chinese traveller.

Sponsorship information: Interparfums has stepped forward as Platinum Sponsor and King Power Group (Hong Kong), Bally and JTI are to sponsor the Opening Cocktail on 10 March. Furla will invite delegates to lunch on day one, while coffee breaks will be sponsored by Coccinelle and Mondelez. Lanyards will be provided by LS travel retail, Lacoste will dress the conference hostesses while delegate gifts will be provided by several companies including Kipling, Haribo, La Sultane de Saba and Travalo.
