The development comes amidst growing tension in the country after Military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama has repeatedly called for Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase to step down.
Bainimarama is said to be planning to address the nation today to announce the creation of an interim government and Qarase is understood to be keeping a low profile. Meanwhile, the governments of Australia and New Zealand say they have ships on standby to evacuate their citizens if necessary.
