‘Audacious’ cross-border Polish shoplifters jailed in UK

By Kevin Rozario |

Two Polish shoplifters who flew to Bristol Airport in the UK specifically to steal duty-free goods have been jailed for two months.

In two trips last year Pawel Lenard, 35, and Magdalena Rezler, 34, (pictured below) took goods worth just over £4,500 ($7,380) from the World Duty Free store in the airport terminal. On 20 October the pair flew in from Poznan in Poland and took away goods worth almost £2,000 ($3,300).

A passenger in the departure lounge spotted the two acting suspiciously and alerted airport staff but both suspects had boarded a plane and left the airport before they could be apprehended.

‘AUDACIOUS’

However the thieves booked another flight to the airport on 15 December when police officers based at the airport were waiting for them. This time they had packed 40 boxes of perfume (see main image) worth over £2,600 ($4,300) into their suitcases but were arrested as they waited to board a flight out.

On Friday last week both were sentenced to two months in prison. A spokesperson from the Bristol Police Ports Unit comments: “These two thieves came to Bristol Airport to shoplift on a professional scale. On the return leg of their second trip they had booked an extra piece of hold baggage each and it is clear they were expecting to return home to Poland with much more than they brought with them. This was an audacious shoplifting attempt but one we were ultimately able to interrupt.”
