The European Commission has given its backing to recommendations by the EU's Regulatory Committee for Civil Aviation Security today to continue limiting the amount of liquids airline passengers can carry in hand luggage, but liquid/gel-based
duty free sales made in sterile airside areas have been given the official all clear.
At a meeting of EU experts in Brussels today, the European Commission confirmed that the new regulations will come into force throughout all member states in early November.
Passengers will be subject to a limit of 100 milliliters (1/8 of a pint) of liquid per container and all containers must be able to fit inside a transparent plastic bag which is clearly visible to security staff.
Cabin baggage is also to be limited to a maximum of 56 centimeters (22 inches) x 45 centimeters (17 inches) x 25 centimeters (10 inches). In addition, passengers will have to remove jackets and coats and laptop computers and any big electrical items from their bags for inspection.
The Commission said that it has no problem with passengers carrying on liquids and gels bought in duty free shops which are located in sterile airside areas beyond security controls.
