Ten travel retailers have demonstrated interest in submitting bids in the blockbuster Spanish airports duty free tender, TRBusiness can confirm.

Lagardère Travel Retail, Gebr. Heinemann, Aer Rianta International and Dufry join Bahrain Duty Free, Hotel Shilla, Setur Duty Free, GMR Airports (India), China Duty Free Group and DFA-owned UETA, according to a TRBusiness source close to the process.

The first of the deadlines involved in the ‘world’s largest duty free shop tender by turnover’ concluded yesterday, after Spanish airports operator Aena released the much-anticipated tender in December.

Six lots spanning 86 duty free points of sale – plus a large number of additional premises dedicated to other categories – over more than 66,000sq m, are up for grabs across 27 airports.

The length of the contract is 12 years (plus the option of three annual extensions).

Information was first unveiled during a presentation attended by TRBusiness at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference – the details of which were shared by TRBusiness via LinkedIn at the time.

The ‘interest’ demonstrated from the aforementioned 10 retailers represents the first time that operators from the Americas and Asia have been tempted to conduct business at Spanish airports, TRBusiness is reliably informed.

The bidding process will progress with an evaluation of the solvency of the companies prior to bids being welcomed in earnest.

The result of the tender is expect in July 2023 after being ratified by Aena’s Board of Directors.
