Smartseller, the joint venture founded in 2020 between Gebr. Heinemann and casualfood, has created a new joint venture with Nürnberg Airport to manage travel retail, F&B and convenience stores at the location.

The agreement will come into force on 1 January 2024, subject to approval by the antitrust authorities. The Nürnberg travel retail offer is currently managed in-house by the airport.

Smartseller was created to offer small and medium-sized regional airports added value, by combining the travel retail offer with food & beverage and convenience. The Nürnberg store will be its fourth iteration, following openings at Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia, and in Münster/Osnabrück and Leipzig/Halle, in Germany.

Smartseller: all-round expertise

Smartseller’s approach provides expertise in all areas, and services from a single source, alongside a modern experience for passengers that is highly flexible and geared to their needs, according to the company.

The new smartseller ‘all yours’ branded concept will open at Nürnberg Albrecht Dürer Airport next year. The open, integrated store will cover 1,200sq m. It will showcase a strong regional connection to Nuremberg and the region of Franconia. In particular, the area’s Sense of Place will be reflected in the range of food and drink on offer.

Sebastian Schäfer, currently manager of the airport’s own shops, has been named Managing Director of the new company, smartseller nürnberg GmbH & Co.

The acting representatives of the company will be Klaus Dotzauer, Commercial Director of Flughafen Nürnberg GmbH and Managing Director of the airport subsidiary Flughafen Nürnberg Service GmbH, and smartseller Managing Director Karl Niendorf.

Niendorf commented: “Smartseller stands for long-term and trustful partnerships. The collaboration on this joint venture has been planned for a term of at least ten years. Both parties are very happy with the result.

“It has been demonstrated once again that smartseller is the ideal partner for medium-sized airports because we are prepared to develop an individual solution together at all times. This has been a success as well and together we are going to make the offer even more attractive for travellers.”

Dotzauer added: “The renovation of the shop and the integrated concept mean that we are succeeding in presenting the range of products for passengers in a more varied and comprehensive way in a space that already exists. Together with smartseller, we are going to continue to improve the shopping and travel experience of our passengers.”
