Travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann has extended its contract with Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), laying the foundation for a significant expansion of the Duty Free and Travel Value offer in the security area of Terminal 1. 

As part of the further development of the market place behind security, the retail space will grow to around 3,800 square metres.

The redesigned market place will combine an expanded shopping offer and a food and beverage area with a direct view of the apron, giving travellers a place to spend time close to the Duty Free and Travel Value area while observing airport operations.

At BER, the planned expansion gives us the opportunity to create a future-oriented retail environment that combines a targeted product offering with greater convenience and an overall enhanced passenger experience.”

The project is said to underline the shared ambition of Gebr. Heinemann and Berlin Brandenburg Airport to ‘create a more attractive, convenient, and experience-driven environment for international passengers at BER’.

Added Steffen Jopp, Managing Director Gebr. Heinemann at BER: “The expanded space will allow us to introduce new concepts and create a more inviting atmosphere that encourages travellers to spend time in the market place.

“We are particularly pleased that the new retail areas will be complemented by food and beverage options and further enhancements, creating a more enjoyable experience for all passenger groups.”

The airport is also adding a number of further enhancements designed to improve the overall passenger experience and reinforce its role as a central point of orientation and a hub for travellers.

The redesigned market place will combine an expanded shopping offer and a food and beverage area with a direct view of the apron.

“By way of the redesign, we are creating more space for people to linger, expanding the range of facilities for passengers and opening up the area more towards the apron. This creates a further attractive area uniquely combining shopping, restaurants and the airport experience. BER’s travel experience will, therefore, be noticeably enhanced.”

The transformation will be carried out in several construction phases and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. Passenger and retail operations will continue without restriction throughout the construction period.
