Irish airport shop sales boom

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has reported spectacular sales at its Travel Value shops at the airports of Dublin, Cork and Shannon, where 'Sales of Summer Scents' have increased by 70%, or E.1m since 2004.
According to the DAA, fragrance sales totalled E.475,000 in 2004, E.935,000 last year and E.1.5m during the summer of this year. At the same time, unit sales increased by 54% this year, compared to 2005, soaring from 32,336 units last year to 50,000 in 2006.
The top three best-selling fragrances this summer were by Calvin Klein, with CK Summer proving to be the most popular fragrance of the year with 8,300 units sold at a sales value of E.225,000. Eternity Woman was the second favourite scent for Travel Value customers with 3,000 units sold and a sales value of E.96,000 and in third place was Eternity Men, with 2,500 units sold and a sales value of E.76,000.
At the same time, the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club in County Kildare was also a great success story for the Irish tourism industry and not least for the Travel Value shops at Dublin, Cork and Shannon which achieved E.900,000 in retail sales, with 99% of the sell through on all Ryder Cup products achieved by the weekend after the Ryder Cup.
Merchandise sold in the Travel Value shop at Dublin Airport consisted of men?s and women?s clothing and Ryder Cup souvenirs. The Glenmuir men?s clothing range sold 10,500 items with a sales value of E.425,000; followed by the Eurostyle ladies clothing range selling 19,000 units at a sales value of E.310,000; and Level 4 souvenirs sold 10,500 units with a sales value of E.95,000.
Other spectacular performances included the 30sq m MAC shop at Dublin Airport which has recorded a 49% increase in sales in the year to date so far.
The DAA is now predicting bumper Christmas sales at Dublin, Cork and Shannon and perfumery gift set sales are expected to be better than ever with the first five weeks of the festive season showing a 72.5% increase in sales when compared to the same period in 2005.
The DAA says that E.330,000 worth of gift sets have already been sold in the period from week 41 to week 45, compared to E.190,000 last year. Sales volumes are expected to reach E.1.5m by the end of 2006, an increase of E.650,000 on last year.
