London Luton Airport (LLA) has announced it broke the one million passenger mark (1,008,184) in November – a 5.6% rise year-on-year.

The achievement, which builds on 44 months of consecutive growth, provides a boost to its £150m ($176m) terminal upgrade plans, which include new and exciting retail and dining options.

In a statement, LLA says the investment is also aimed at delivering a ‘much-needed’ capacity boost of 50% to 18m passengers by 2020 – up from its current 12m.

TRBusiness understands new commercial developments could begin to materialise from Q2 2018.

As a UK hub for low-cost carrier easyJet, LLA handles other airlines such as Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui and Vueling in a route network serving 130 destinations, including services to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

LLA handled 14.5m passengers in 2016 – and increase of +18.5% on 2015.
