Porsche Design 50th anniversary Capsule Collection

The P‘8478O is a special 5oth anniversary edition that pays tribute to the sunglasses created by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1978.

Munich-based Porsche Design is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new, limited edition 50Y Porsche Design Capsule Collection of sunglasses.

The collection comprises two new editions of design classics, with 1972 pieces of each style available – a nod to the year the company was founded.

The sunglasses pay tribute to the design DNA of the brand by teaming its aesthetic heritage with state-of-the-art materials.

They’re presented in an exclusive box with a matching strap and are available now in selected retail outlets as well as at porsche-design.com at a RRP of €590 (US$ 620).

Lucas Gestin, Director Global Retail & International Key Accounts Eyewear, Rodenstock said of the launch: “For half a century, Porsche Design has been an icon of style and luxury around the world. Today, shoppers in the travel retail market are searching for that perfect blend of luxury and excitement, but also for a brand they know they can trust.”

“Porsche Design has 50 years of heritage behind it but continues to create ground-breaking new collections which showcase its distinctive DNA and character with iconic designs,” Said Gestin.  “This limited edition collection is a perfect example of why this brand has enduring appeal all over the world and we are delighted to share it with customers in the travel retail market.”

The sunglasses story starts in 1978 when Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche created the P‘8478 – ‘the world’s first pair of sunglasses with an interchangeable lens mechanism’, according to the company.

The special edition P‘8928, part of the Porsche Design 50th anniversary Capsule Collection.

A tribute to the model, the P‘8928, was created in 2020 featuring the squared aviator look as well as the interchangeable lens mechanism, with an edgier design. The characteristic clasp on the nose bridge was adapted to the lens shape of the model to bring it up to date.

The 50th anniversary special editions of these two signature designs feature a matt black frame, platinum-coloured highlights made of ultralight titanium, and grey polarisation lenses with olive-coloured interchangeable lenses.

For the first time, they’ve been designed with extremely flat spectacle lenses to highlight the modern oversized look.

Porsche Design products are designed and developed by the F. A. Porsche Studio in Austria and are available worldwide.
