Ryanair calls on airports to ‘curb excessive drinking’

By Charlotte Turner |

Ryanair-21-May-2018-leadRyanair has confirmed to TRBusiness that it is calling for airports to introduce measures to curb ‘excessive drinking’ by passengers about to board flights as it reminds its own customers who are flying from the UK to Ibiza that they will not be permitted to bring duty free alcohol onboard the aircraft, but must instead place in the hold or leave behind.

In a statement obtained by TRBusiness from Ryanair, the airline says: “Customers flying from the UK to Ibiza are not permitted to bring duty free alcohol on board our aircraft.

“Those who have purchased duty free alcohol will be asked to either place their purchases in their cabin baggage and into the hold at the boarding gate, or leave their purchases behind.”

According to the airline, this has been Ryanair’s ‘long-standing policy’, however it appears the policy has come under closer scrutiny since its passengers were reportedly emailed about it recently (according to The Sun newspaper.)

AIRPORTS NEED TO ADDRESS ‘EXCESSIVE DRINKING’

Ryanair also says that it is calling for measures to curb drinking at airports, which could have potentially detrimental effects to F&B operators.

“We are also calling for significant changes to prohibit the sale of alcohol at airports, such as a two-drink limit per passenger and no alcohol sales before 10am,” says Ryanair.

“It’s incumbent on the airports to introduce these preventative measures to curb excessive drinking and the problems it creates, rather than allowing passengers to drink to excess before their flights.”
