Lawyers rub hands in Kenya as law suits fly
By Administrator |
In a fresh turn of events, the former President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi, has threatened to sue the former head of World Duty Fee Kenya Nasir Ibrahim Ali, after the latter claimed to have
paid him a $2m bribe in 1989.
The allegation that Moi took the money in return for giving Ali the rights to establish duty free shops in Kenya's two international airports was highlighted once again when Ali's attempt to sue the Government of Kenya for Ks.40bn ($500m) failed recently in the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
Ali's lawyer immediately countered with a threat to sue Moi after the tribunal, headed by Judge Gilbert Guillaume who suggested that Ali should be suing Moi and not the people of Kenya.
Ali has also implicated Moi's son Gideon and his former personal assistant Joshua Kulei in what he alleges was a plot to cover up a diamonds scam (Goldenberg), which in turn led to the seizure of his shops at Nairobi and Mombasa and his eventual deportation.
Lawyers for Gideon Moi and Joshua Kulei said yesterday that they would also be suing Ali for libel and defamation.
