Sim Local targets outbound passengers with new LHR T5 departures shop

Sim Local is planning expansion in the UK, at hub airports worldwide and in the US market.

Sim Local, the largest seller of Sim cards in the UK travel market has opened a new departure store at London Heathrow Terminal 5 today (30 June 2021) as part of its plan tap into the outbound customer portion.

Plans to open the store were first revealed by TRBusiness last year in an exclusive interview with Andrew McClellan, Chief Operating Development Officer, Sim Local.

The new store is located after security at T5B and will be the first time Sim Local is able to connect with outbound passengers and help them avoid roaming charges while abroad.

Travellers can purchase local sim cards offering mobile data plans from Three, Lycamobile, AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as a range of accessories from Panzer Glass and Skross.

Sim Local already operates four different stores at Heathrow, located in arrivals across Terminals 2, 3 and 5 and the Underground walkway. It also has a network of Sim card vending machines in all terminals.

CLEAR PASSENGER TARGET GROUPS

In conversation with TRBusiness last October, McClellan said: “The aim [of the new departures store] is to tap into customers leaving the UK and sell them sim cards before they leave for their destination country. This will enable passengers to be connected from the moment they touch down.

McClellan, who revealed passengers travelling to the US are the main targets, along with a small number travelling to South Africa and Asia added: “We will either be offering global sim cards or local sim cards for America.”

Travellers can purchase local sim cards offering mobile data plans from Three, Lycamobile, AT&T and T-Mobile, along with a range of accessories from Panzer Glass and Skross in the new London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 departures store.

On the prospect of being able to target outbound passengers, McClellan added: “This is a really interesting development and one which could lead to further openings if successful.”

Speaking more recently about today’s opening he remarked: “We are thrilled to be launching a brand-new store at Heathrow Terminal 5, to cater to travellers who are flying internationally. This store is our fifth at Heathrow, cementing our strong retail presence here and paving the way for future expansion both domestically and abroad.”

Sim Local already operated four different stores at Heathrow, located in arrivals across Terminals 2, 3 and 5 and the interchange located between the airport and London Underground stations.

Fraser Brown, Retail and Property said: “As the UK’s front door, we are delighted to welcome long-standing partner Sim Local’s brand-new store into Terminal 5, as international travel recommences.

“Heathrow strives to provide the best passenger experience in the world and this opening will be a great addition for our outbound passengers, who will be able to stay connected to their loved ones at a lower cost whilst abroad.”
