Smoker's International Airways (Smintair) is still on course for take off in October 2007, according to its 55-year old founder Alexander Schoppmann and smoking will be allowed in all 138 seats.
Schoppmann is leasing three Boeing 747s for his new services and has cut the number of seats from the normal 559 passenger configuration to just 138 to make it as comfortable as possible for passengers.
The entrepreneur plans to offer flights from D?sseldorf Airport to Tokyo and Shanghai and there will be no compromises on service, he says.
Smintair will offer Cuban cigars, caviar served by flight attendants in designer uniforms, a deluxe on-board entertainment system and large ashtrays at every seat. There will also be a lounge with a duty free shop and even the crew will be allowed to smoke.
Smintair will offer business and first-class seats only with a first class ticket from D?sseldorf to Tokyo expected to cost around E.10,000 ($12,680) and a business-class seat around E.6,500 ($8,305).
Schoppmann says he expects to make profit within the first 12 months and is forecasting annual sales at E.500m ($639m) and a pre-tax profit of E.120m ($153m) by October 2008.
