Traffic pick-up signs encourage Zurich

While commercial results were still negative for the month of June, Unique (Flughafen Z?rich AG) Chief Commercial Officer and Member of the Executive Committee Peter Eriksson says he is optimistic that there are early signs

that July could be better.

He reports that passenger traffic also showed signs of picking up in June – with the a similar trend continuing into July so far.In absolute terms, a total of 1,944,087 passengers used Zurich Airport in June, a gain of 1.7% versus June 2008. The year to date passenger figure decreased by 3.8% however.

Transfer passengers were also up by 7.8% to 703,618 in June (YTD +1.6%). The transfer rate which was at 34.3% last June is currently running at 36.3% (YTD 36.4%). At the same time, O&D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) fell by 1.5% to 1,233,334 compared with June 2008 and the year-to-date transfer total in 2009 is down -6.7%.

Airport management reports that the current low-cost carrier market share stands at 10.1% (YTD 9.9%), showing a decrease in passenger figures of 5.6% (YTD -8.5%) versus the previous year.

In terms of commercial activities, total turnover (net sales to consumers) during June reached Swf.37.8m ($35m) representing a -9.3% decline against the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, turnover per departing passenger in June was Swf.38.90 ($36), which is 10.8% lower than in June 2008.
